I am an Associate Director with Mental Health Strategies. I have over 20 years Board experience for NHS, Charities and Government bodies. As Director of Services Research at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health I led the research and publications behind many of the National Service Framework services. I was seconded to the Department of Health as Senior Policy Adviser to support implementation of the new community team models and was responsible for the £700m Modernisation Fund.
As Director for the South East Development Centre, part of the National Institute for Mental health in England, I developed the capacity to make change happen across the region. Part of this work was promoting ways to strengthen the service user movement and race equality.
Most recently I was Executive Director for Strategic Development with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I developed the Better by Design strategy to improve community services and reduce reliance on inpatient care. I was also responsible for successful competitive bids to extend the Trust’s services.
I am a registered mental health nurse. I have an MSc in Social Research and researched the quality of life for people with mental health problems for my PhD at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Medical School.
Improving services for people with mental health problems or dementia remains my passion. In 1980 as a nursing assistant I knew we could do better, and indeed there have been tremendous improvements. Today we have the opportunity to do yet more.
I am on the Board of Trustees for the Alzheimer’s Society, and a strategy and development consultant.
